The recognition of this day is so much that this festival is celebrated by different names in different parts of the country, like in Tamil Nadu it is celebrated as Pongal. In Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh it is called Sankranti. This day is called Makar Sankranti in Goa, Odisha, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jammu.
